Radnage W.I’.s June Meeting was rather a departure from the norm. We held our meeting, ( in tandem with “The Ridge Evening” W.I.) on a canal boat on the Grand Union Canal. The evening cruise was most relaxing, the weather good and the fish and chip supper excellent. It was very interesting to see the wildlife on the river, (mostly birds, Herons, Grey Wagtails, Moor Hens, Coots etc.) and also to see what would be familiar countryside from a very different perspective, not to mention the historical significance of the whole canal concept, now sadly used only for leisure purposes. The Victorians who masterminded the system would have turned in their graves if they saw the lack of industrial enterprise .!! A very relaxing and interesting evening was had by all.

Our catering committee are planning their next event which will take place in July, we are catering for a birthday party. Some of our members are going to Hall Barn in Beaconsfield to see the Shakespearian play Romeo and Juliet.

The W.I. Reading Group is still going strong, This month we read Rosamund Pilcher’s “Winter Solstice” our next book is “The Memory Keepers Daughter” by Kim Edward.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 1st July 2009, in Radnage Village Hall 7.15 for 7.30pm. Mr C Dignan is our speaker with a talk entitled “Beginners Guide to the Universe”. Visitors are always welcome, a small admission fee is charged.

Radnage W.I.’s April meeting was held as usual in Radnage Village Hall.

Our Speaker Sylvia and her husband are speakers for the Hearing dogs for Deaf People charity. They had brought along their current charge, Ivy, a small, black and very cute hearing dog which they were “socialising” during her training. Ivy spent a lot of the meeting asleep on the lap of one of our members who also has hearing dogs during training, when not asleep she kept a very close eye on the canines on the recreation field, taking their owners out for an evening stroll. She made it quite clear that she wanted to join in. The talk was about the work of the charity and the dogs, and provoked many questions. Tea and cakes followed, and the usual noisy, chatty, social time.

The business part of the meeting, involved organising our forthcoming litter pick, and signpost washing day, on 9th May 2009. We hope to involve other village organisations in this event.

Our next catering event is in May. Carol has the list of food required.

We are all looking forward to our outing in June with The Ridge evening W.I. Our near neighbours. We are going for a trip on a canal boat and having a fish and chip supper. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather!

On Friday 8th May , 10am – 12 noon, Kay Brown is hosting a coffee morning at Four Acres, Green End Rd in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The usual Raffle prizes, bring and buy, also whole cakes are needed please as Kay intends to have a cake stall, as well as providing mouthwatering morsels with the coffee. Good company, Good cakes, and a Good cause! Can you think of anything better to do on a Friday morning in May!! be there or be square!

Our next meeting is the resolutions evening on 5th May 2009. 7.15 for 7.30

We will also be able to hear the speaker who was cancelled in February due to heavy snow. Ruth Towell will be talking to us on “Working with infants and researching into Food Allergies”

Radnage W.I. met for their March meeting on Wednesday 4th March 2009, fortunately the threatened snow did not arrive! A sound of constant chatter filled the Village Hall (well we hadn’t met for two months, so there was a lot of catching up to do).

Our President Janet called all to order and our speaker for the evening, Hillary James, proceeded to tell us about her fashion design training and her years in TV at Pebble Mill, while she demonstrated her sewing techniques.“Sew Easy” describes exactly her approach to dressmaking and soft furnishing projects. Hilary kindly let us into the secrets and short cuts which make sewing a joy rather than a chore, but still give a professional finished result. The evening was wonderful, we were all inspired, and I think that a lot of Hilary’s “10 minute Cushions” will be on show in members houses over the next few weeks.

After a welcome cup of tea and very enjoyable biscuits made by our tea hostesses, we engaged in the business part of our meeting planning catering events, a trip on a boat with our nearby Institute friends The Ridge Evening W.I., and a litter pick around the village, it was also muted that we should clean the road signs at the same time. It looks as though we could be on the way to a busy summer in Radnage.

Our next meeting will be held on 1st April 2009. The speaker will be a member of the “Hearing dogs for Deaf People” team, complete with a dog. The talk will be about the work of the charity.

Visitors and new members always welcome. Anyone requiring more information or wishing to join Radnage W.I. call 483879 or 484493

As I am sure you all know by now Radnage W.I. does not meet in January.

We would however not like anyone to forget about us early in 2009 and so we will catch up on our December activities to fill in the gap.

We all enjoyed catering for the Friendship Club Christmas Dinner early in December.

They have commissioned us to provide a Christmas Dinner for members for several years now, it is an event enjoyed I hope by both caterers and “caterees”! This year we were also very pleased to be one of the first groups to be using the Village Hall after the installation of the new glazed doors. A very big improvement, and even seems to make the Hall warmer !!! A big thank you to the Hall Management team for their efforts in organising the building work.

A team of W.I. Members also helped to dress the Christmas tree and decorate the Village Hall, ready for Christmas festivities. Only yesterday (6th January) we were there again removing the Xmas decorations and stowing them away for another year.

Looking forward, we have an interesting programme for 2009. You will be finding a flyer in Contact giving details of each months speakers. Our February meeting will be held in Radnage Village Hall on Wednesday 4th 7.15pm for 7.30. Ruth Towell, our speaker for the evening, will be talking about working with infants and researching into food allergies.

We are always pleased to see visitors and (hopefully) new members at our meetings

For more information call Janet 483879 or Sue on 484493.

We have however not been idle, last week we helped at our local school, by providing cakes for a promotion of Fair Trade foods. Mums and children visited the fair trade stalls on their way out of school. Our cooking using fair Trade ingredients went down very well particularly with the children. I’m guessing that those children didn’t need any tea on that day.

Radnage W.I. met in the Village Hall on Wednesday 5th March 2008, at 7.15pm, our Speaker, Linda Travers –Smith, Water colour Artist, was already putting out her painting equipment.

We had several visitors for the evening, some of whom wished to take part in the painting session. Many of us who had originally thought that a bit of “hands on” experience with a paint brush was a good idea, were now beginning to regret our decision, and were more than a little concerned that our “Master pieces” were perhaps not going to be so masterly!! However Linda, a very friendly person, first told us about her own artistic background. In the main she is self taught, but has attended art courses as and when they were pertinent to her style of work.

Click ‘Read the rest of this entry’ for more!

She made it all sound achievable, and gave us confidence to have a go. Linda had planned a little exercise with the primary colours (red, blue and yellow) and the results obtained, when in a transparent medium like watercolour, one puts one colour over another.

Our masterpiece was an “Up Up and Away” moment, as we colour washed in a sky and painted 10 balloons, in primary colours with some partially behind others to give the colour overlap, strings were added, and hey presto a charming picture of balloons floating off into a blue sky Magic!!! We were all thrilled to bits with the results. Linda’s own inspirational work was displayed at the meeting; she is a talented lady and an excellent teacher.

After refreshments the business part of the meeting took place, plans for a visit to the Theatre at Hall Barn Beaconsfield in the summer, the possibility of some of our members attending a few more jewellery making classes, and plans for the catering of the W.I. ramble in May. Sally reported that her Fair Trade Coffee Morning had gone well, and lots of people had sampled the fair trade recipes available and were impressed by their flavour.

Our next meeting is an “open meeting” ( anyone can attend, regardless of gender; but a small admission charge is made ) which will be held on Wednesday April 2nd 7.15 for 7.30 pm. followed by light refreshments: Following our local speakers theme, on this occasion our Vicar, Linda Richardson, will give a light hearted talk entitled “Careers, Christians and Curates” .

We do not usually have a problem persuading our members to attend the AGM, and this meeting was no exception. The turnout was excellent. We do however lure our members there by offering drinks and refreshments, but I am quite sure that they would attend anyway. Click ‘Read the rest of this entry’ for more!

The new committee was elected and will still be led by our President Janet . Enid our wonderful, efficient secretary stepped down after 8 years in the post. She has always been so cheerful and willing to help, we shall miss her greatly. Kay is stepping in as minutes secretary, with help from Sue as correspondence secretary.

As it was our Birthday last month, the W.I. business was kept to a minimum, therefore we had a lot to discuss at this meeting. Our Xmas Dinner plans were finalised and menus chosen. Future catering events were discussed, and a catering sub committee formed. Janet will place the poppy wreath on the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday. A team of W.I. volunteers will decorate the village hall for Christmas, in time for the St Mary’s Xmas Bazaar.

Plans for our Bursary Day on Saturday 26th January have been finalised. The Morning is exclusively for members of the W.I. and will have sessions on Floral Art, demonstrated by Jane Kimber. Novelty sugar craft ornaments demonstrated by Carol Wheeler and jewellery making demonstrated by Linda Kelly. There will then be a break for lunch, followed by the afternoon program which will be open to the public. Mr W Guidery and Mrs C Hands will give a talk about the history of Radnage and St Mary’s Church. This will be followed by an English Wine Tasting between the hours of 4 to 6pm. Nigel from Daws Hill Vineyard Radnage will bring wines (Reds, Sparkling wine, Whites and Roses to taste from amongst others Plumpton Estate East Sussex and Brightwell Vineyard Oxford. There are tickets available for the Wine Tasting costing £5.00 each.

The afternoon session will be open to the public. For more info about this event call Janet 01494 483879 or Deidre 01494 482414
