June Meeting Report

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

Radnage W.I’.s June Meeting was rather a departure from the norm. We held our meeting, ( in tandem with “The Ridge Evening” W.I.) on a canal boat on the Grand Union Canal. The evening cruise was most relaxing, the weather good and the fish and chip supper excellent. It was very interesting to see the wildlife on the river, (mostly birds, Herons, Grey Wagtails, Moor Hens, Coots etc.) and also to see what would be familiar countryside from a very different perspective, not to mention the historical significance of the whole canal concept, now sadly used only for leisure purposes. The Victorians who masterminded the system would have turned in their graves if they saw the lack of industrial enterprise .!! A very relaxing and interesting evening was had by all.

Our catering committee are planning their next event which will take place in July, we are catering for a birthday party. Some of our members are going to Hall Barn in Beaconsfield to see the Shakespearian play Romeo and Juliet.

The W.I. Reading Group is still going strong, This month we read Rosamund Pilcher’s “Winter Solstice” our next book is “The Memory Keepers Daughter” by Kim Edward.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 1st July 2009, in Radnage Village Hall 7.15 for 7.30pm. Mr C Dignan is our speaker with a talk entitled “Beginners Guide to the Universe”. Visitors are always welcome, a small admission fee is charged.

Radnage W.I.’s April meeting was held as usual in Radnage Village Hall.

Our Speaker Sylvia and her husband are speakers for the Hearing dogs for Deaf People charity. They had brought along their current charge, Ivy, a small, black and very cute hearing dog which they were “socialising” during her training. Ivy spent a lot of the meeting asleep on the lap of one of our members who also has hearing dogs during training, when not asleep she kept a very close eye on the canines on the recreation field, taking their owners out for an evening stroll. She made it quite clear that she wanted to join in. The talk was about the work of the charity and the dogs, and provoked many questions. Tea and cakes followed, and the usual noisy, chatty, social time. (more…)
